    The IR has Two Faces: Positioning Institutional Repositories for Success

    This article will describe ongoing efforts at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries to evolve the role of the institutional repository (IR) and to effectively position it within the context of the Libraries’ collections, research support, and scholarly communication services. A major component of this process is re-examining the fundamental aims of the IR and aligning it to the Libraries and the campus strategic goals. The authors situate UNLV Libraries’ experience within the context of the current literature to provide background and reasoning for our decision to pursue two, at times conflicting, aims for the IR: one for scholarly communication and another for research administration

    For the purposes of this article, the definition of an eBook lending platform is one that contains eBooks from multiple publishers that patrons may browse and checkout. Though these platforms have eBooks that allow for multiple and simultaneous users, in general they have a one-book, one-user model. Details about the major eBook lending platforms for academic libraries, eBook lending platform characteristics, why and how an academic library would license one, and finally what the future of this rapidly changing environment may hold are explained in this article

    Characterization and dewaterability of water treatment plant residues

    nanA variety of water treatment residues were characterized in order to determine the influence of specific chemical constituents, process flow schemes and raw water quality on the performance of sludge dewatering processes. The use of conventional sludge characterization parameters for process selection and design was evaluated by comparing process yields to sludge characteristics. The extent of dewatering was determined for four sludge dewatering methods and the physical properties of chemical sludges at varying solids levels compared to process performance to determine which of the processes produces a 'handleable' sludge. In this study the draining and drying rates of chemical sludges applied to sand beds were related to several sludge characteristics. It was found that the time to drain was related to the sludge specific resistance, applied depth and solids concentration. Air drying occurred in two distinct phases. The initial or slow drying phase was governed by the sludge cake depth and drained solids concentration while the rapid drying rate was found to approximate the free surface water evaporation rate. Sludges with a coefficient of compressibility less than 0.7 were found to penetrate into the sand bed.Project # A-061-MO Agreement # 14-31-0001-3825 and 402

    The Libraries They Are A-Changin’: How Libraries Reorganize

    This paper will report on the results of a study of library reorganizations in the literature. The authors identified five steps common to all library reorganizations, and this paper describes those steps as well as two management change theories most mentioned in the literature--the eight-step process of change by John Kotter and Reframing Organizations by Lee G. Bolman and Terrence E. Deal. The paper will draw conclusions formed by a comparison of these theoretical models to the practice and real life experience of reorganizations as described by libraries in the literature
